Academics
Academic Programme
Since the beginning of 2001 the Grade 8 learners hare followed the Outcomes Based Education Programme (OBE). At the end of Grade 9, every learner must choose a subject package comprising six subjects that will be included in the Senior Certificate Examination in Grade 12. Each learner must take at least one subject from the following six lines:
- AFRM or ENGM
- ENGS or AFRS
- MATH, TYPG
- PHYSC, BIOL (If Biology is taken on this level, it cannot be taken on line F as well), BUSE
- ACCO, TECD, ARTS, MUSC.
- GEOG, BIOL, HOME, FITT
Other subject combinations are not permitted. At the end of the Grade 9 year, the school recommends a certain package or group of subject packages for each learner, taking into consideration the results of aptitude tests and the learner's academic record. Parents are welcome to discuss their child's subject choices for the Senior Secondary Phase with the school. Parent and child decide the final subject choices.
Academic Progress
During the first and third terms, the pupils write control tests and at the end of the term, a term mark is obtained from test results and class work marks. Parents receive a report card on which the learner's progress in each subject is recorded. After the June and November examinations, parents receive a detailed report on the learner's progress in each subject as well as a report on his/her participation in the extra-curricular programme, etc.
After each test is marked, learners have to take their test books home for their parents to initial so that parents are aware of the learners' progress. Grade guardians inspect the learners' progress regularly and then deal with the problems of the under-achievers to ensure that each learner reaches his/her maximum academic potential.
Because it is impossible for the Headmaster to attend to the progress of over a thousand learners, guardians are appointed for each grade. If a learner experiences any problems (academic or other) he/she is able to discuss these with his/her guardian. Parents are also welcome to contact the grade guardian to discuss their child's progress or any other problem.
An academic atmosphere is promoted by identifying the top ten academic achievers in each grade at the end of each term. For these learners an enrichment programme is offered.
The academic prize giving ceremony for Grade 12 is held in the fourth term. Prizes and merit awards are given to learners who achieve a minimum aggregate. Prizes are also awarded to the top three pupils in each class, and the top learner in each grade. The aggregates are based on the Trial exam.
Academic colours are awarded in the first term of each year. They are awarded in the first term of each year based on the promotion mark of the previous year. The academic prize giving for Grade 8-11 learners takes place at the beginning of the first term.
Text Books
The learners themselves must buy textbooks and stationery. Learners can either buy second-hand textbooks from older pupils or place an order with Rygill's at the school at the end of the year. Stationery can also be ordered by order form provided by Walton's at the school.
