Cultural activities form an important part of the extra-curricular programme in order to develop all facets of the learners' personalities. Clubs and societies are run under the guidance of staff members although learners are also offered the opportunity to develop their leadership potential. The parents and the public are regularly invited to attend concerts, recitals, debates and displays throughout the year. Empangeni High School is situated south of Main Road (the major road between Empangeni and' Richards Bay). The school is within walking distance of the centre of town. The new building was completed in 1975 and is joined to the old building. The school now contains well-equipped Biology and Science laboratories; modern Metalwork workshop and Housecraft centres.

The music centre consists of tutorial and practice rooms. Pupils can study the piano, the flute or the trumpet. There is also a singing room. The "Museum Foyer" and the honour boards in the school hall reflect the spirit, the tradition and the proud achievements of the past.

The tuck shop is run by a group of mothers and offers a variety of refreshments.

The Character of the School
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 07 July 2004

Over the years, Empangeni High School has developed a character of its own that has made learners and teachers distinctive wherever they go. We place a high priority on personal neatness as regards school uniforms, the covering of books and especially the care of our surroundings. Learners who are guilty of polluting and spoiling their environment, will not fit in well here.

We also regard friendliness as a positive characteristic that must be encouraged and exercised at all times. Therefore we expect scholars to greet, as amiably as possible, one another, their teachers and anyone with whom they come into contact.

Learners enrolled at Empangeni High School undertake to adhere to and respect its rules.

A learner is thus always an ambassador of our school. We, therefore, expect them not only to show excellent sportsmanship and hospitality, but also to conduct themselves in an exemplary manner both in and outside of the school (whether in school uniform or not) so as not to degrade the learner' corps.

It is our priority to encourage our pupils to be involved in all aspects of school life. This includes not only academic studies, but also the development of the pupils' total character, personality, leadership potential, etc.
